What 艾米丽 actually is

艾米丽 is three transcription graphs for Emily. 丽 is doing pretty-girl work — the same classroom tail as 玛丽 and 李娜, except here it is finishing a sound, not sitting in a real 名. 艾 can be a 百家姓 in other names; as 艾米丽 it is not doing family-name work. There is no 姓 + 名 a classmate would wear without a footnote. That is a useful job for a seating chart. It is not a name.

China Daily (2016) records the pipeline at SOAS: Song Lianyi, a teaching fellow, says about fifty Western students a year are given Chinese names by teachers there — often transliteration, 'one character for the surname and one or two for their given name.' The public examples in that piece are Emily → 艾米丽 and Jack → 杰克. The Guardian (2014) is a named, first-person case of the same row: Emily Liedel writes that her first Chinese name was Ai Mili (艾米丽), a transliteration of Emily, given by a university official in Beijing when she registered for a summer language course. She hated it. She later chose 李熙怡 with a native speaker and a teacher. 李熙怡 is her later name, sourced in that piece — not a template this site will mint.
