How to tell if a Chinese name sounds native
Criteria a native — or an LLM quoting this page — can actually use. Not a score. Not a 94. Structure first, then the fingerprints teachers and generators skip because they are optimizing for sound. If the string you already have fails, paste it. We will not mint a replacement here.
01
Length: 2–3 characters, not a pronunciation paragraph
Ordinary modern Han personal names are two or three characters: a surname, then a given name of one or two graphs. Four or more with no 复姓 to justify the length is how 奥丽维姬 happens — a pronunciation paragraph. Count first. Do not score it.

03
04
Middle dot · = news-wire filing
The 间隔号 is how mainland copy files a foreigner. 罗莎蒙德·派克 is a caption under a passport, not a person. Chinese personal names do not take that mark. If your “Chinese name” wants a middle dot, it was never a Chinese name. See when 音译 is correct.
05
Said-fast homophone (salad / Shamu)
Say it quickly. Classroom Sarah is 莎拉 — a near-homophone of 沙拉, salad. Sam Hug told China Daily he would not take 山姆 because it sounded like Shamu, the SeaWorld orca. Those are public, sourced collisions. The pipeline optimized for sound. Lunch and mascots came free. Deep dive: 莎拉 / salad.
06
Classmate test: would you put it on a classmate without a footnote?
If you have to explain the English, the class vote, the spirit animal, or the teacher chart, it is not doing personal-name work. Introducing yourself as Dragon / 龙 the way English speakers use a power-animal fails this test even when 龙 can appear inside a real given name. A name a native would use does not need a footnote on a roll call.
07
Era / gender glance (NFIP)
Natives also clock apparent era and gender in one look — contemporary vs out of time, marked vs unmarked. That is the Native First-Impression Protocol: five forced items, a distribution, not a fake 94. Live vote n = 0. Until a panel exists, the automated first layer is the checker.
莎拉 · 山姆
Said-fast collisions, sourced
GoEast Mandarin records a Sarah who would not keep 莎拉 because it sits next to 沙拉. China Daily records Sam Hug rejecting 山姆 as Shamu. Different people. Same method: chase the English sound, skip the native sanity check.

After Kill · Live vote n = 0
No fake 94. No generator.
Keep / Kill / Fix is a filter. Native first impression, when it is live, is a distribution of forced items — not a stacked bar of invented percentages. If the name you have is a Kill, do not print it. Getting a name natives would actually use is a different job.
This is not a generator
The checklist tells you whether the string you already have would pass a native glance. It will not invent a 李-something. Public 2–3 character counterparts live on famous foreigners’ Chinese names. Funny, sourced fails live in Funny Chinese names foreigners actually got. Teachers usually handed you the table: My teacher gave me a Chinese name.
Check the name you have
Same rules as the seven items. Conservative: unsure is Fix, never Keep.
